On 25.02.2011, in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, the first coordination meeting for the “Balkan Velo Trail” approved by the European Commission was held in which the Center for Development of the Eastern Planning Region became a partner along with Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and the Centre for Development of the Southeastern Planning Region. The project aims to establish bicycle paths to be part of the "Iron Curtain Trail” in the border regions of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece and Romania. The trail enters Macedonia through the border crossing at Delcevo, continues through lowland areas to Berovo, Pehcevo, and then continues to Strumica through Bosilevo and Novo Selo, where it crosses the Bulgarian border.
Defining the trail involves not only its demarcation, and in this initial phase mapping, but also installing signage to indicate all cultural, tourist, and archaeological sites and monuments, as well as, the items that are traditionally of interest to every rider and hiker. This project is only a beginning for future projects related to the development of alternative tourism in Europe and the world.
