In the period from 8 to 12 November 2025, representatives from the Republic of North Macedonia, within the framework of the project “Support to the Implementation of Regional Waste Management Systems in the Eastern and North-Eastern Region” (NEAR/SKP/2022/EA-RP/0137), carried out a study visit to Romania.
The delegation visited the counties of Prahova and Covasna, where they were introduced to modern integrated waste management systems, which cover all stages – from selective collection and transport, to mechanical-biological treatment, composting and final disposal, in accordance with European standards. In Covasna, a system with a recycling rate of over 50% was presented.
Particularly significant was the visit to the company ECO BIHOR SRL, which, as a public-private operator, applies an integrated approach to waste management, including mechanical-biological treatment, composting and energy production from biogas.
As part of the study visit, a meeting was held with representatives of the European Investment Bank, where experiences and information on opportunities for supporting regional infrastructure projects were exchanged.
The acquired experiences and good practices represent an important basis for improving regional waste management systems in the Republic of North Macedonia and contribute to creating a cleaner and healthier environment.
