Second training held to strengthen capacities for green infrastructure development

The Center for Development of the Eastern Planning Region in the period from December 3-4, 2025 at Hotel Izgrev Shtip, organized a second two-day training on strengthening capacities for the development of green infrastructure, for representatives from the municipalities within the Eastern Planning Region and from the Municipality of Gotse Delchev, Republic of Bulgaria, within the framework of the project: “Transforming urban areas with green infrastructure” EcoScape BGMK0300060, financially supported by the Cross-Border Cooperation Program Interreg-IPA Bulgaria-North Macedonia INTERREG VI-A IPA 2021-2027.

The aim of the training is to strengthen the capacities of municipalities, public utility companies and partners from the cross-border region for successful planning and implementation of measures for the green transition of cities.

The training program, in addition to the exchange of experiences and best practices in the field of green transition, contained special sessions for familiarization with the key segments and pillars of the EU Green Deal. New innovative approaches and policies for sustainable urban systems, sustainable action plans were presented. A special session was dedicated to the role of municipal public utility companies as well as the opportunities for applying with projects to public calls for funding activities in the field of green infrastructure and environmental protection.

The training explained in detail the basic segments of the green transition and its practical tools. Participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the guidelines for urban green infrastructure, municipal infrastructure vs. green infrastructure and recommended investments in sustainable systems.

Through practical work in groups, participants became familiar with the process of identifying a green project idea, conducting research on it, developing a detailed project dossier and requesting calls for application of project proposals and their implementation.

The aim of the training cycle was for the participants to strengthen their knowledge regarding the benefits of green transition and green infrastructure, as an appropriate way to sustainably solve some of the communal problems, ways and possibilities for creating green areas in urban areas and methods for proper planning of the future development of cities and other smaller settlements in the cross-border region.

The training was attended by around 30 representatives from the East Planning Region and the Municipality of Goce Delchev. On the last day of the training, all participants were awarded certificates for their participation and dedication.
