The Osogovo Mountains have a huge potential for the development of year-round tourism, something that has been repeated many times over the years, but unfortunately, all efforts to move things have not moved from a dead point, until today.
Following the initiative of the Council for the Development of the Eastern Planning Region submitted to the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia in 2019, the idea of building a ski center at Tsarev Vrv and developing ski tourism in the Osogovo Mountains was supported and approved by the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia on the Government session held on May 29, 2021, recognizing it as a national strategic priority.
In the last few months, on the initiative of the Center for the Development of the Eastern Planning Region, several meetings were intensively held with all stakeholders on the next steps to be taken to revive this initiative, which with the maximum commitment of all stakeholders, can grow into a modern and contemporary ski center, with contents and facilities that will rank it in the top five ski centers in the Balkans.
Today, a memorandum of cooperation was signed with Minister Ljupcho Nikolovski, the mayors of the municipalities of Probishtip, Kočani, Makedonska Kamenica, Kriva Palanka and Kratovo and the Center for the Development of the North-Eastern Planning Region, which will enable the use of funds from the Rural Development Program of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and water management for the preparation of the necessary documentation.
These funds will be used to provide a solid information base for the preparation of the urban plan for the construction of the ski center of Tsarev Vrv and the development of ski tourism in the Osogovo Mountains, that is, the existing feasibility study for the Tsarev Ski Center will be revised, updated and supplemented. Top with a concept project.
The main goal of this study is to update the contents of the mentioned space, the development possibilities determined in the planning documentation, above all in the Spatial Plan of the Republic of North Macedonia, to try to define the appropriate spatial model of the tourist resort and to perceive the positive, but also the negative effects from the socio-economic and legislative aspect. The study should treat in detail the spatial-planning aspects of the process of establishment and construction of the new tourist resort Tsarev Vrv, through which the social intention for its construction is specified.
The update of the feasibility study and the conceptual project will serve for the development of an urban plan outside the settlement with an appropriate strategic assessment of the impact on the environment, for which the Center for the Development of the Eastern Planning Region plans to apply for funds from the Program for Financial Support of Rural Development .
The Tsarev Vrv ski center would have 36 trails with a total length of 60 km, which would be served by 9 cable cars and 3 ski lifts and would cover an area of 1200 hectares.
